Big Freeze On The Way
A large cold airmass, trapped below a high pressure system situated over Tasmania, is anticipated to gradually move up and traverse the country, resulting in a significant drop in overnight temperatures during the upcoming days.
This expansive airmass is not forecasted to bring any precipitation or snowfall to New Zealand, with surface-level winds expected to remain gentle to calm. Inland regions of both islands are projected to bear the brunt of this dramatic temperature descent. According to the current model data, the period from Friday to Sunday is identified as the timeframe when the most severe frosts are expected. Temperatures in Mackenzie Country, Central Otago, and the Southern Lakes District could plummet as low as -5 to -8 degrees Celsius. Daytime temperatures in these regions are unlikely to rise beyond the double-digit mark. Light frosts may also develop as far north as Auckland.
Alpine areas in both Islands could see temperatures plummeting below -10 degrees Celsius, resulting in perilous driving conditions along the major state highway passes.
