Wild Autumn Weather, possible cold snap & single digit highs for some;

TEMPERATURE ANOMALY ON THURSDAY

A series of low pressure systems will pass south of New Zealand in the week ahead, bringing bouts of heavy rain, strong winds and cold surges for the lower South Island, including a possible dusting of snow for the mountains and ranges.

The first low pressure system passes south of NZ late on Monday, bringing a period of heavy rain to Fiordland and western Southland, with scattered falls further east. Rain will also spread up the West Coast, only heavy about the ranges - could be a few showers over the central and southern Western North Island. In Addition, expect strengthening west to northwest winds for many regions, especially for the South Island and lower North Island - refer to our In Depth Analysis for more information.

A showery westerly flow brings showers to western areas on Tuesday as a further low pressure system passes just south of Fiordland late in the day, bringing rain to Fiordland and scattered falls for Western Southland and Stewart Island. Gusty west to northwest winds are expected to sustain, strengthening in the far south and southwest late in the day.

Winds turn generally west to southwest as the low pressure system passes south of NZ on Wednesday, with heavy rain for the Western South Island, with strong or gale west to southwest winds for many regions

24 hour total Precipitation - Wednesday

Finally on Thursday, a strong cold south to southwest flow is forecast to spread north over the South Island.
